Ian Murchison is a co-founder and industrial designer at The Federal, an Ottawa based design consultancy. He had worked as an Industrial Designer with the accessory design team at Research in Motion (RIM) for just over three and a half years. He graduated from the Carleton University Industrial Design Program in Ottawa, Canada, in 2010, after completing a 16-month internship with BlackBerry. He received a scholarship for his work on his thesis project, which was focused on medical equipment and designing for humanitarian assistance. At RIM, he was part of the accessory design team, focusing on a wide range of products to enhance and complete the BlackBerry user experience. In his short time at RIM, Murchison has been a part of 117 patents, filed worldwide. He also works as a freelance photographer, with his work ranging from magazine cover shoots, to product photography and weddings. He works to combine the end goal, the user experience and innovation together as one, no matter the product, service or scenario.

Following a successful internship, I was hired as a full-time designer on the Accessories Design team. In this position, I am responsible for a wide range of products including carrying solutions, protective shells, cables, bluetooth and wired audio products, advanced accessories and power peripherals. Following each and every product from concept through to mass production.

This position involves close collaboration between the internal ID team, Project and Program Management, Brand, Graphics, Packaging and Mechanical Engineering in order to deliver a successful product. Working with the team we have successfully developed an ID design language that is key to be able to work quickly and effectively across many forms.
