Josh Crutchmer

I art direct and design live and advance pages for The New York Times news, sports and business sections. I work with editors, photo editors and graphics artists to plan and coordinate the paper's print editions. I have designed the front page of The Times as well as live and advance section fronts, spreads and inside pages.

Responsibilities: Lead daily, Sunday and projects presentation and planning. Edit design for all sections of the paper. Lead art director and planner for all news, sports and features presentation. Directed coverage of LeBron James’ return to Cleveland and run to the 2015 NBA Finals, the 2014-15 Ohio State Buckeyes national championship and the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductions. Currently preparing to cover the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

Organization and planning: Work closely with editors across all platforms in the company to plan projects and live coverage. Coordinate photography and illustrations with staff managers and freelance artists and writers.

Honors: Helped the Plain Dealer to its two best performances in the Society For News Design’s annual competition in 2014 and 2015 — the first came while also helping the Buffalo News to its best-ever performance in 2014.

Oversaw presentation desk at the newspaper that emphasized teamwork and design. Primary responsibilities: Sunday news and project design, co-managed designers and assisted in digital design.

Managed news design team (including payroll and evaluations). Directed design for all news sections with an emphasis on Sunday and project design. Also created multiple e-books.

Began as lead sports designer and worked on projects including the induction of Michael Jordan into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Also worked as lead business designer, with a focus on the Sunday section.

Co-managed design department with the design director, and oversaw production of A1, Sunday and projects. As manager, emphasis was on staff development. Designed current incarnation of company logo.
