Paper Summary: Major problems within design education have been noted and the design and delivery of curricula for the future is primarily the responsibility of the design teacher. The main objective of the research is to conclude as to why creativity and innovation must play a part and moreover how. The Irish government has identified the lack of creativity and innovation in our design graduates as posing a huge problem for the future of our economy. Constructivism is being utilized as the scaffolding whereby research of theory and the use of theory in practice can provide practical solutions for a way forward. The main findings are that there is a lack of cognitive behaviour instilled in our design students that would ensure the nurturing and development of the whole brain. In conclusion this is an area of education that not only offers constructive results to the design teacher but to teachers of all subjects.
