NHS Experience Based Co-Design

Bristol's Specialist Drug and Alcohol Service and the regional NHS Trust wanted to trial a Service Design approach to review and improve care pathways for their services.

The NHS leadership team wanted to trial Experience Based Co-Design (EBCD) to engage both healthcare professionals and service users, as experts of the care system, to collaboratively design service improvements.

I designed and developed a Service Design proposal, which outlined how the EBCD approach could be used to review care pathways and identify pain points in the service user journey, which could be improved by collaboratively designing with patients and service providers.
With a research associate, I co-designed the first user research stage of the Service Design proposal – based on the EBCD framework. The proposal formed my contract with the NHS and managed expectations of what the project deliverables would be.
