Bikini Girl in Cape Town Winter - This illustration was incorporated into a photograph of a surfboard on a wintry beach. It was part of a Winter in Cape Town campaign; for the BBDO ad agency. The spiral "watermark" is my addition. Medium: Photoshop 6.
Shoes - This picture is one of hundreds drawn for a Zulu reader/dictionary and a learner's book published by Shooter and Shuter, South Africa. It's a new style, involving digitized pencil lines modified and enhanced with colour dropped in to form the final picture. The style combines realistic line drawings with a funky use of colour because the readers are young, ie 6 - 8 years old, and come from rural and urban backgrounds, with varying degrees of visual literacy and sophistication.
Rodney - Detail from a story for nine-year-olds in Afrikaans, published by Maskew Miller Longman, South Africa. Rodney is a supporting actor so to speak, but I just liked the look of him so here he is. This is another new style: the author wanted a "tentative, scribbly and loose style" -a great challenge if the goal has always been to draw with a minimal, confident line. New clients=new styles. Wonderful. Medium: Pencil.
The Thing - This is a detail from a double-page spread from an English Anthology for Grade 8 learners, published by Cambridge University Press, Cape Town. The poem was called "The Thing" and one of the specs for the brief was that there was to be just enough detail of the Creature to trigger the children's imagination, since they were to draw it for themselves. Media: Pen & ink, Photoshop.
Detail: Tina & Gina - This detail is from a children's book called Tina & Gina, a story I'm writing and illustrating. The book was created during a course for aspirant writers (& illustrators) of children's books, hosted by PRAESA, of the University of Cape Town. Leen van den Berg and Jan de Kinder, well-known Belgian writer and illustrator respectively, facilitated. Media: Brush & ink, watercolour, Photoshop.
