Residential Addition, Palo Alto, CA - 2012-13

The Hung family bought this house in 2012, which at the time consisted of 3 bedrooms, and two and half baths. The addition helps the family’s future needs so they can conveniently raise their newborns here and be part of the neighborhood community for an extended period.

The original master bedroom was on the first floor, which would make it hard for them to be close to the newborn so they decided to expand and convert the den into a master closet and master bath. The existing living room had double height so new ceiling joists were added and catwalk was enclosed to create a large Master bedroom with an en-suite upstairs .

The new design and architecture of the home is consciously made to be within the existing footprint of the house so the visual mass of the structure stays intact. The new elevations use elements from the existing structure to preserve the architectural style and neighborhood’s character.
