Riddell Flexible Shell Helmet Concept
Our team at BELL was asked to provide concepts to the Advanced Concepts Group, for a new football helmet for the Riddell brand (part of BRG sports at the time).
A concept I've had for a very long time, was a helmet based on insect physiology. Instead of making a hard helmet, and strapping it to the head, this design was intended to start with a soft base layer, similar to wrestling earguards, and add a suspension layer, to which plates of the outer layer would be attached.
My concepts led to the exploration of flexible shells within Riddell, and resulted in the SpeedFlex line of helmets.
