Normally reviewing U2 albums when they come out is a pretty fruitless exercise for me, because it takes a while—sometimes years—to come to a definitive opinion on them. Some have grown on me over time (like “Rattle & Hum”); others, not so much. “Songs of Innocence” is a particularly hard album to analyze; while the album feels whole, Bono stated in an essay a companion album called “Songs of Experience” is nearly finished and should be out, in his words, “soon enough” (tho in “U2 Time,” who knows how long “soon enough” is). Reviewing “Songs of Innocence” at this point feels like giving a season recap of “Breaking Bad” after only seeing the first six episodes.
Of course, that won’t stop me from doing it anyway.
