My name is Lucas Van Dyke, and I am a passionate, outgoing, and optimistic Industrial Designer with a high level of energy and proficiency in all facets of the design process.

I, as an industrial designer, create and execute design solutions for problems of form, usability, physical ergonomics, marketing, brand development, and sales.

    _______________________________

IN MY CURRENT INDUSTRIAL DESIGN JOB:

Straddling the roles of both Designer and Engineer. As the sole Industrial Designer I serve as facilitator and liaison between concept creations, product management, material selection, sourcing, and our vendor base with the mission to ensure that all our products go from concept to reality on time while maintaining design intent without compromising on manufacturing, quality control, or cost.

I work with our team to be responsible for simultaneously developing numerous case solutions with unique finishes, styles, and design requirements, for a multitude of different clients, products, and brands, each with their own challenges. I serve as the marketer and salesman by constructing presentations using sketches, photography, and renderings to pitch ideas, validate designs, and win the business by earning the customers faith in our expertise by allowing the clients to feel responsible for the case and fall in love even more with their product.

I ensure that the designs fulfill the needs of the clients through connecting with them and active exploration of their specific needs and unique requirements for their devices, providing technical flat drawings to help communicate and keep everyone on the same page.

Driving innovation and exploration into new manufacturing techniques, new materials, and new finishes to enhance our design intent, improve user experience, and reduce waste whenever possible. I push the factory and our clients to think outside the run of the mill, to enhance the available beauty that can be had with the clothing of their device.

    _____________

In addition to my continually growing proficiency in the technical aspects of Product Design, I have strong attention to detail and also have strong organizational skills, which allow me to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. I have ample experience producing graphic presentations and communicating my design direction and concepts to any size audience. I hold a deep respect and alertness of past well-designed products, packaging, and branding, which gives me the awareness and responsiveness to capitalize through the growth and development of future products, services, and businesses. I also enjoy working as part of interdisciplinary teams, in which I am able to effectively navigate and work with a variety of personalities and disciplines.

Throughout my collaborative experiences, I have developed into a strong team player and at times have even had the opportunity to act as a mentor to fellow team members. I am always open to the inputs of others, and can implement feedback and critique readily. I have the ability to change the design vision and direction quickly capable of meeting deadlines. With my desire to continue obtaining knowledge and skill through a collaborative opportunity, working for an in-house design department would be an ideal experience, where my background in Industrial Design would unite with my cross-disciplinary teamwork exposure.

I am seeking to obtain knowledge and experience in the field of Industrial Design by working alongside fellow designers through a collaborative product design opportunity.

Industrial design is concerned with all human aspects of machine-made products and their relationship to the environment. The industrial designer is responsible for human factors engineering, safety, shape, color, texture, maintenance, and cost. Industrial designers deal with consumer, as well as industrial, products. In order to achieve these ends, designers must be involved in four major design and research areas: human behavior, human-machine relationships, the environment, and the product itself. Areas of design investigation in the Bachelor of Industrial Design include furniture, housewares, appliances, transportation, tools, farm equipment, medical instruments, electronics, human-computer interfaces, and recreational support equipment. Graduates of the Masters of Industrial Design program have career opportunities in four general types of practice: corporate design offices in manufacturing companies, independent consulting offices, governmental agencies, and design education.
