Hi there! If you have a moment, check out my website that I host from my home on a personal server; the URL is https://benpowerscreative.com linked up on the banner).

I'm a husband, dad, problem solver, maker, and industrial designer. Since the fall of 2019 I've been working at DePuy Synthes, a J&J company, in Warsaw, IN. I've always had an interest in health and wellness and being a part of the Industrial Design and Human Factors team has been a really enlightening experience, giving me opportunities to work on knee and hip joint projects, spine, trauma, and surgical power tools that DePuy Synthes is involved with. The learning I've received surrounding human factors engineering has broadened my skill sets and given me a better appreciation for designing for users.

Prior to my time at DePuy Synthes, I was able to be part of a dynamic and talented team at Polywood, LLC in Syracuse, IN. During that time, our team created a number of distinctive designs and many entirely new designs for retailers including Target, Ashley Furniture, Lowe's, Home Depot, Sam's Club, Trex, LLBean, and many sold directly by Polywood. As we learned new ways to push the limits of our HDPE materials, we were able to begin development on a variety of exciting new products that have now become part of the Polywood suite of outdoor furnishings.

My previous experience has exposed me to a wide variety of design skills (and more technical ones) to create some awesome designs in a variety of fields that have given me a broad understanding of manufacturing techniques and product lifecycle management.

I enjoy spending my time outside of work with my lovely wife doing as many active things as we have energy for when we're not too tired from chasing around our 2nd grader, two preschoolers, and toddler.

Specialties: Industrial design. Human factors. Furniture design. Graphic design. Problem solving. Concepting. Brainstorming. Analyzing and quickly synthesizing data to form a big picture. Articulating ideas. Motivating my peers. Javascript coding. Small homemade home automation sensor design. Hobbyist-level 3D printing. Making dietary recommendations if you like. And laughing.

  • Education
    • Non-degree seeking enrollment Biology
Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne
      2012 - 2014
From the summer of 2012 until the spring of 2014 I was enrolled at IPFW to complete the groundwork for and then begin earning credits towards what most likely will be a Master's degree in Biology. Over the course of my time there I was able to accumulate 44 credit hours with a GPA of 3.96.
    • BA Industrial Design Professional Program, Spanish Language and Literature
      Purdue University
      2005 - 2011
The Industrial Design Professional Program requires four sequential years due to a rigorous portfolio review during the sophomore year that cuts the number of students down to a mere 16. I started my journey at Purdue applying my analytical background in the college of engineering, but soon switched to industrial design due to my desire to use problem solving and creativity more actively. Fortunately I was able to easily pass the design review, dive into the upper level classes, and really enjoy the creative problem solving that Industrial Designer offers. In addition, I was able to double major (second major in Spanish Language & Literature) and also get a minor (in Philosophy) while upholding academic excellence. My graduating GPA was 3.68.
    • Study Abroad Spanish Culture, Languege & Art
Univeristy of Minnesota at Toledo (Spain)
      2008 - 2008
Enrolled in 9 credit hours studying Spanish conversation, the history and literature of the Spanish Civil War, and Spanish art and architecture. I was able to travel to 10 different cities during this amazing study abroad experience.
