Some of the first real graphic design I did was making ads for a punk music mailorder that I ran out of my bedroom as a teenager. Those ads weren’t “smart” or “creative”—they just showed what I had for sale and why I thought you should buy it. I still think they’re some of the best stuff I made because they embody two principles that matter: a product or idea worth sharing and a focus on being effective (versus “creative” or award-winning).

Throughout my career I’ve tried to maintain those principles. To spend as much of my time working on behalf of things that I want to see in the world and always trying to be more effective. Sometimes I’ve stupidly pursued the things I believe in to the detriment of my wallet but I’ve never regretted it. I strive to be more effective everyday whether it be reading, listening to lectures or reflecting on my work.

I always want to be able to say “That project was worth doing and I couldn’t have done a better job”.

  • Experience
    • Adjunct Faculty
Minneapolis College of Art and Design
      Sep 2008 - Present (17 years 9 months)
I have held teaching appointments in the BFA, BSc, MFA and Graphic Design Certificate programs at MCAD. My courses are often defined by a “work-first” attitude that foregoes lectures and examples in favor of making something (usually within strict parameters) to learn and discover first hand. My advanced classes are workshops in strategic thinking: students are expected to define a personal problem to solve (a job goal, skill development, work in a new medium) and then find an appropriately challenging project through which to solve that problem. This creates a scenario where a simple question like “what should I work on?” becomes a project unto itself.
