Owner, Tour Planner & Guide
India
Aug 2006 - Oct 2008 (2 years 2 months)
Motorcycle Getaways provided international motorcycle travellers a one-of-a-kind adventure experience in the Himalayas and South India. I was responsible for a whole range of activities in addition to being a tour planner/organizer and guide. I single-handedly designed the company's website, all the display ads and brochures; managed the service provider network and was also responsible for business development and customer support.
Motorcycle Getaways was my second attempt at entrepreneurship and relatively more successful than my previous gig, although I would have loved to continue this as my main profession. Recession forced me to get back to a full-time job as running tours seasonally wasn't sustainable with a day job, where I couldn't do justice to either. I learnt a lot of valuable lessons from this (ad)venture and want to get back to it, hopefully, soon.

Midway through my under-graduation course in Archaeology, I discovered my passion for commercial art and design after winning inter-college/university competitions in sketching and poster-making. I decided to drop out and pursue a career in graphic design instead.
As a fresh dropout, I realized that I had to rely on more than just my talent to stand out from the crowd. I taught myself the basics of design and all the tools of the trade (Corel, AutoDesk & Adobe suites) using borrowed magazines and books, practiced them on a computer I'd assembled, thus beginning my journey in graphic design, which would also be my first attempt at entrepreneurship.
I landed my first contract, albeit based on verbal agreement, at an acquaintance's cyber cafe, where I managed day-to-day administration tasks, in addition to learning and working on design projects for small businesses. I earned a small stipend every now and then, more as a token of appreciation than anything else, but more than money, the place gave me the much-needed, real-world experience that a fine-art degree alone wouldn't have provided. I never stopped learning.
• Conceptualised, designed and managed all design projects -- Websites, brand identity design, stationery, annual reports, brochures and pamphlets for small businesses
• Configured and assembled desktops (PCs), carried out hardware repairs, performed software troubleshooting and managed Windows workgroups.
